Basketball Court Shooter Denied Immunity Under ‘Stand Your Ground’

A Valrico man is set for trial after a basketball court argument turned deadly. The defendant was across the street from the court when he told a teenage skateboarder to stop skateboarding on the court. The victim stood up for the teenager and the confrontation between the two men resulted in a death.

The defendant attempted to defend his actions using Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which does not require any person to retreat from a situation that requires deadly force to protect themselves or another person in danger. The court decided not to grant him immunity for his actions and the case will now go to trial.
